The volume is now available Sustainable museum. Complex ecosystems projected towards an inclusive future., edited by Modesta Di Paola and coordinated by Manuela García Lirio, published by the Editorial University of Granada (2025).

In line with the conceptual framework proposed by the Complexhibit project, this book proposes an important twist: to think of the museum not as a «container» of heritage, but as a living infrastructure, a social laboratory., whose sustainability depends on relationships, flows and care. Conceptualising the museum as a «complex ecosystem» implies understanding it as an entity composed of multiple agents (institutions, publics, objects, narratives, policies, technologies) that interact dynamically and generate emergent effects. This is where Complexhibit becomes a conceptual tool, not just a technical one. The project investigates exhibitions as complex cultural systems and develops models to analyse the interweaving of people, institutions, works, speeches and ideas that constitute them. This gaze - which shifts the focus from «the collection» or the «publics» to the relations- offers the book a robust framework for thinking about sustainability and inclusion as systemic propertiesnot as a list of good practices, but as conditions that are designed, measured and rebalanced within an interdependent environment. In particular, the Complexhibit approach (network science, semantic modelling, visualisation and large-scale analysis) strengthens the ecosystem idea by making it into something operativeThe concept of the museum: a concept capable of describing, comparing and explaining how the worlds of the museum and the exhibition are articulated.
