Complexhibit participates in the XXV Congress of CEHA 2025
The intangible city. Symbolic cartographies and cultural networks in the construction of urban subjectivity.
The Complexhibit project, through the IArtHis_Lab group at the University of Malaga, presented one of its research projects on 2 October 2025 at the XXV National Congress of the Spanish Committee for the History of Art (CEHA)), held in Murcia under the slogan Priscas Novissima Exaltat et Amor. Praising and loving the old and the new.
The communication, entitled The intangible city. Symbolic cartographies and cultural networks in the construction of urban subjectivity. and signed by María Ortiz Tello and Ángel M.ª Lumbreras, with the collaboration of Nuria Rodríguez Ortega, proposes a reading of the city as a network of visible and invisible dimensions that configure the urban experience. Based on the concept of thick map -The study analyses how art institutions, museums and galleries generate symbolic links that shape a «parallel city», woven by relationships, memories and cultural practices.
The case study focuses on the exhibition system of Malaga (2010-2022), one of the most active cities in the contemporary museum scene. Thanks to data from the digital infrastructures Expofinder and OntoExhibit, more than 2,800 exhibitions, 4,400 artists and 114 institutions were examined, revealing cultural constellations that transcend administrative boundaries and configure a symbolic territory of their own, born of the interaction of these agents.
The communication thus underlines the capacity of the Digital Humanities to rethink the notion of the city and the urban subject from the intersection between art, data and technology, proposing a new epistemology of the urban as a relational and performative system. This participation in CEHA 2025 reinforces Complexhibit's vocation as a platform for transdisciplinary research on contemporary ways of inhabiting, representing and thinking about cultural spaces.
