Annual Graduate Symposium, AHNCA, Association of Historians of Nineteenth-Century Art

Congress

The 20th Annual Graduate Symposium, co-sponsored by the Association of Historians of Nineteenth-Century Art (AHNCA) and the Dahesh Museum of Art, was held virtually on Saturday and Sunday, 25-26 March 2023. The Mervat Zahid Cultural Foundation generously awarded the $2000 Dahesh Museum of Art Prize for the best paper, with the opportunity to be published in Nineteenth-Century Art Worldwide. Graduate students and doctoral candidates were invited to submit proposals for 20-minute papers on topics in the history of art and visual culture of the long nineteenth century (1789-1914).

Among the participants, Barbára Romero-Ferrón, from Western University in Canada, presented her research "Concept(s) of Spanish Art through the Nineteenth Century. Network Analysis of Exhibitions in Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America, 1800-1939". Romero-Ferrón applied network analysis to explore the construction of the concept of Spanish art between 1800 and 1939, using temporary exhibitions as the main object of study to understand the diversity of concepts and artists exhibited. Romero-Ferrón, a doctoral candidate at Western University, completed a BA and MA at the University of Málaga, Spain. She was a visiting researcher at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and an intern at the Getty Research Institute.
